Attacks on BJP Lawmakers
The law and order situation in West Bengal has come under severe scrutiny. A brutal attack targeted a BJP delegation while it was distributing flood relief in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri. The incident left Malda North MP Khagen Murmu critically injured, requiring admission to the ICU in a Siliguri hospital. Such Attack on BJP lawmakers has stirred the state as well as the country at large. The Prime Minister has termed the attack “appalling”.
A mob attacked a four-member BJP team as it arrived with relief materials for flood victims. The team included MP Khagen Murmu, Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, Shamik Bhattacharya, and Dipak Barman. Party sources claimed that assailants attacked Murmu and Ghosh with fists and stones. They forced them back toward their vehicle.
Safety of BJP Lawmakers
Reports allege that Trinamool Congress supporters carried out the attack. Some reportedly identified themselves as “Didi’s Soldiers.” The violence intensified when the vehicle tried to leave. Hooligans threw stones and shoes at it. Images show the BJP lawmakers’ car with a smashed windscreen and broken windows. Attackers struck MP Khagen Murmu on the head near his eye. The blow caused heavy bleeding.
One of the BJP lawmakers Shamik Bhattacharya condemned the incident. He alleged a complete breakdown of constitutional order and law enforcement. He also alleged that the state sponsored the attack. This incident fits a pattern of alleged attacks on opposition figures. Earlier, attackers reportedly targeted MP Dr. Jayanta Kumar Roy while he was distributing aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. The opposition often faces significant hurdles in obtaining permission for rallies, frequently needing to approach the court for sanction. This is a stark contrast to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 2011 request to the assembly speaker to allot more time to the opposition in the house.
Does it reflect the anxiety of Mamata Banerjee before the 2026 assembly election?
