Key Highlights
- The Suvendu vs Abhishek rivalry started when Abhishek Banerjee stepped into the Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee made him the youth president by replacing Suvendu Adhikari.
- Suvendu Adhikari is an in-born politician. He started his career from the Students Wing in the College whereas Abhishek has stormed into the West Bengal Politics due to dynasty politics.
- Suvendu Adhikari has been active enough to empower the Trinamool Congress to gain footholds in Nandigram, Midnapur, Maldah, Murshidabad, whereas Abhishek Banerjee didn’t contest even in a local municipal election.
- Once Suvendu Adhikari left Trinamool Congress and joined BJP, Mamata-Abhishek duo started hurling abuses on him as “Gaddar”. Suvendu also started soaring high against Mamata-Abhishek.
- The police and administration deliberately hinder any meeting or rally of Suvendu Adhikari and he has to approach the court for the permission.
How Did the Suvendu vs Abhishek Rift Begin?
Indeed, Gopalkrishna Gandhi might have been able to arrange a meeting between Buddha and Mamata. However, it is impossible to make Suvendu Adhikari and Abhishek Banerjee sit together. Moreover, the daily verbal attacks of Suvendu vs Abhishek will not stop anytime soon. Although, in today’s West Bengal, it seems they cannot even drink without abusing each other.

Power, Privilege, and the Youth President Question in West Bengal Politics
Therefore, to understand this deep hostility, we must look back at the past. When Suvendu entered politics, Abhishek was probably still busy playing at home. Thus, at that time, Suvendu and the Adhikari family strengthened the Trinamool Congress in Nandigram and across Medinipur. As a result, expectations of return from the party were very high.
Not only that, Suvendu expanded the Trinamool Congress by breaking the National Congress and other parties in Murshidabad, Malda, and Dinajpur.
As a result, he almost became the unofficial number two in the party. Furthermore, if we exclude Mamata Banerjee and Mukul Roy, Suvendu is perhaps the only leader whose organizational skills are beyond question. In short, Suvendu knows how to practice real, grassroots politics by being on the ground.
Suvendu vs Abhishek power struggle: Grassroots Politics vs Inherited Leadership
In Contrast, Abhishek was born with a silver spoon. Therefore, he became the “crown prince” of the Trinamool Congress. Consequently, Mamata Banerjee sent him to play on a fully prepared field from the very beginning. In reality, he never had the ability to win even a single panchayat election on his own.

However, Mamata ensured his victory from Diamond Harbour and introduced him to active politics. Not only that, she provided him with a security cover that even she herself probably never used.
Mamata-Suvendu: from Grassroot to larger political landscape in TMC vs BJP struggle
In fact, it is important to remember that Mamata rose as an opposition leader. Whenever she received news of an incident, day or night, she rushed to the spot herself. Undeniably, at times, she even reached the location secretly by sitting on the back of a motorcycle. Similarly, Suvendu continues to follow the same political tradition.
In contrast, Abhishek cannot step outside his long security ring. Moreover, during the Trinamool’s Nabajowar yatra, the buses and camps arranged for him reflected such luxury that people never saw him as one of their own.
Why Did Mamata Back Abhishek?
Despite all this, Mamata Banerjee removed Suvendu and appointed Abhishek as the Youth President of the Trinamool Congress. In light of the above, it is natural that Suvendu felt betrayed. In fact, he believed that he had built the party, expanded it, and sacrificed a lot for it. Yet, Abhishek received the same position only because of dynasty policy, without shedding sweat or blood.
Was Suvendu’s Rise a Threat?
Moreover, it is also possible that Mamata began to feel slightly insecure after seeing Suvendu’s rapid success. People often say that whenever Mamata senses someone breathing too close within her space, she starts creating distance. Similarly, we have clearly seen this pattern in the rise and fall of the “Aunt–Nephew” relationship.
Therefore, Suvendu’s exponential political growth and credibility may have pushed Mamata to appoint Abhishek as Youth President to clip Suvendu’s wings. In any case, Suvendu and Abhishek could not stay together in the same party. Eventually, Suvendu left the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP.
However, Suvendu’s moral stand deserves appreciation. Before joining the BJP, he resigned from all government and party positions he held. He even stepped down from his MLA post also.
Though, Today, this is extremely rare. Therefore, we often see MLAs or MPs switching parties without resigning from their elected posts. In my opinion, this is not only unethical or illegal. Rather, it is a clear betrayal of the people who elected them.
Suvendu vs Abhishek conflict: From Party Rift to Open Political Warfare
Now, leaving aside the question of morality, let us return to the Suvendu–Abhishek conflict once again. After Suvendu quit the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP, he became the main target without a doubt.
Undeniably, Mamata, Abhishek, and even the party’s official spokespersons began attacking him relentlessly. Indeed, it is hard to imagine whom they would attack if Suvendu were not in the BJP.
Is Political Language Crossing Limits in Suvendu vs Abhishek rift?
At one time, Mamata even claimed she would make Narendra Modi “to tie with a rope around the waist.” Now, however, her language has fallen to an even lower level. This is nothing but political verbal terrorism.
Meanwhile, the tone of attacks between Suvendu and Abhishek keeps growing harsher. Suvendu often uses terms like “coal nephew” or “thief Mamata.” On the other hand, Abhishek and Mamata repeatedly label Suvendu a “traitor.” As the saying goes, when the king speaks, his courtiers speak a hundred times louder.
Moreover, Trinamool’s mouthpieces do not hesitate to question Suvendu’s sexual orientation in certain incidents.
Above all, this clearly shows how far political discourse in West Bengal has fallen.

On January 2, both Suvendu Adhikari and Abhishek Banerjee almost simultaneously began their election campaigns. In fact, Suvendu held his rally in Chanchal, Malda. Meanwhile, Abhishek campaigned in Baruipur, which falls under his Diamond Harbour constituency.

Why Is Every Suvendu Rally a Battle?
Undeniably, there is a clear trend in West Bengal. Whenever the Leader of the Opposition plans a public meeting, the administration either denies permission or withdraws it at the last moment. As a result, Suvendu had to approach the court to secure permission. Above all, Suvendu had to knock on the doors of the court for 104 times to procure a sanction for the meeting.

However, as a party, the Trinamool Congress creates every possible obstacle. Moreover, the police and the administration block him at every step.
I do not know whether this is also part of a hidden “setting theory.” In other words, they want to keep the contest deliberately between BJP versus Trinamool by increasing Suvendu’s popularity. In short, The Left and the Congress often speak about this very theory.
Be that as it may, in reality, organizing any meeting for Suvendu has become a direct battle against the police and the administration. Even when the court grants permission, it comes with strict limits on crowd size and time duration. However, Suvendu used that permission properly and responsibly.
What Was Abhishek’s Voter List Move?
On the other hand, Abhishek hurled abuses to the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He staged a political drama. Therefore, the organizer created a ramp. He brought a few people onto the stage and made them ramp walk in front of the crowd. According to his claim, the voter list had marked them as dead, even though they were alive.
However, it is unclear whether these people have submitted their documents during the ongoing claims and objections process. Although, the allegation remains incomplete without that verification. In fact, this event looked like a loud display of unearned privilege. Above all, was there any use of making those people strutted down the catwalk?
In fact, it is difficult to say how Mamata herself will view this approach. Furthermore, people who organize meetings to reach citizens, not with police support or party strongmen, may judge this very differently.
Unstoppable Suvendu vs Abhishek rivalry
Abhishek also played a short clip from one of Suvendu’s videos, almost in a childish manner, to keep the Suvendu vs Abhishek rivalry alive. However, serious questions remain. Moreover, how much public support can he really gain by placing local fodder canons on the stage? Above all, how much political impact can such a strategy truly deliver?
Election Commission in Action
However, the news report reveals that the election commission has already sent a notice to the District Magistrate of the South 24 District to conduct an enquiry about those persons and submit the compliance report at the earliest. Indeed, everyone knows that the DM is very close to the Trinamool Congress.
Suvendu vs Abhishek fierce battle: What Do Bengal’s People Really Want?
Furthermore, as the election draws closer, the Suvendu vs Abhishek rivalry will only intensify. However, it is best for Bengal if this conflict remains limited to verbal exchanges between the two leaders. Undeniably, at the very least, the peace-loving people of West Bengal do not want any more political violence or street-level clashes.
In conclusion, they want stability, dignity in politics, and a calm electoral environment.
