TMC fears SIR

TMC fears SIR and thrills BJP

Even the blistering attack on election commission and threat to gheraos the EC office with 10 lakhs supporters failed to cut an ice. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will take places in West Bengal also like the other states. Sukanata Majumdar of BJP, the union minister, has raised a question, Why TMC fears SIR so much?

Why are they so worried about Special Intensive Revision (SIR)? He also, cautioned that the infiltrators will loss their rights to decide the fate of any constituency.  He raised specific doubts about the support of Mamata Banerjee to the illegal immigrants.

Officially, as TMC fears SIR, they are raising the issue of many individuals who may have weaker documentation (e.g., rural migrants, elder voters, marginalized communities). The exclusion of these names are can jolt the TMC. In October 2025, the BJP alleged that officials issued fake birth certificates to create “fake citizens” in the border districts.

The TMC fears SIR  as the electoral rolls may exclude many legitimate because they lack proper documentation. The critics say that TMC has allowed many infiltrators. TMC has also issued them even fake identity cards to increase their support base. So, they have started to fear the worst. They even claim that the SIR aims to “engineer” the voter lists.

Reports confirm that The ECI is using the 2002 voter list to map against the latest rolls. The TMC, however, has urged the ECI to use 2024 as the base year for revisions. Furthermore, they have demanded the protection of  enrollments of all voters in 2024  regardless of any conditions.

Notably, the deceased voters like Dijen Mukherjee and the father of Bratya Basu, the cabinet minister, have come to limelight.  The controversy will revolve mainly through deceased and untraceable voters, as other possible issues of exclusions are widely traceable.

Mamata Banerjee’s Paradox

It is the same Mamata Banerjee, who urged for an immediate discussion on the very serious matter, illegal immigrants in 2005. She said in Lok Sabha that “infiltration into Bengal has become a disaster” and Bangladesh nationals were on the voting list.

Mamata Banerjee staged a drama. She rushed to the well and started crying. She tore papers and threw them at Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjeet Singh Atwal after he denied the debate. Mamata’s today’s stance shows the cruel twist of fate.

Ironically, Mamata has changed her stance. She now reaps the benefits of illegal immigrants in election after election. She also enjoys the active participation of the cannon fodders.

SIR Fuels The ever ending clash between BJP & TMC

Suvendu Adhikari has already ignited the election buzz. He threatened about detection and deletion of the Rohingya Muslims from the electoral rolls. He said they will be deported afterward. The fact of life remains that the Election commission does not possess any constitutional power to deport. Rather such fake threats may mislead the commoners and fuel the TMC to label SIR to be a BJP’s gameplan for Vote Chori.

The thunderous roar met with a defiant counter-roar. The vehement TMC’s “SIR may cause a bloodbath,” is countered by BJP’s “highly escalated baseless figures for exclusion”. The stage is heating up in the pre-electoral stage which is very scary to the commoners. Even nobody knows, whose supporters will face the wrath. The last Intensive Revision of West Bengal in 2002 had gone triumphantly in the favor of the-then ruler CPM. Still TMC fears SIR.

The result of the Special Intensive Revision remains unknown so as the fate of the election, but the SIR has added a new dimension in the political landscape of West Bengal, even beyond identity politics.
