Proven Myths of attacks on BJP lawmakers

Attacks on BJP Lawmakers

The law and order situation in West Bengal has come under severe scrutiny following a brutal attack on a BJP delegation distributing flood relief in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri. The incident left Malda North MP Khagen Murmu critically injured, requiring admission to the ICU in a Siliguri hospital. Such Attack on BJP lawmakers has stirred the state as well as the country at large. The Prime Minister has termed the attack “appalling”.

The attack occurred when a four-member BJP team, including MP Khagen Murmu, Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, Shamik Bhattacharya, and Dipak Barman, arrived with relief materials for flood victims. According to party sources, Murmu and Ghosh were brutally assaulted with fists and stones as they were pushed back toward their car.

Involvement of TMC

Reports allege the attackers were Trinamool Congress supporters, with some reportedly proclaiming themselves to be “Didi’s Soldiers.” The violence intensified as the vehicle attempted to leave, with “hooligans” throwing stones and shoes. Images show the BJP lawmakers’ car with a smashed windscreen and windows. MP Khagen Murmu was hit on the head near his eye, causing heavy bleeding.

BJP lawmaker Shamik Bhattacharya condemned the incident, alleging a “complete breakdown of constitutional order and law enforcement” and suggesting the attack was state-sponsored. This incident follows a pattern of alleged attacks on opposition figures, including a similar reported event when MP Dr. Jayanta Kumar Roy was distributing aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. The opposition often faces significant hurdles in obtaining permission for rallies, frequently needing to approach the court for sanction.  This is a stark contrast to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 2011 request to the assembly speaker to allot more time to the opposition in the house.

Does it imply that Mamata Banerjee’s confidence is shaken before the 2026 assembly election?
