Incidence of Desecration of a Goddess Kali idol
Uttar Chandranagar village in Kakdwip, West Bengal, has witnessed a shocking act of vandalism. Miscreants desecrated the idol of Goddess Kali. The horrified incident took place on the night of 21st October. Mamata Banerjee is not only the administrative head of the state, but a disciple of Goddess Kali.
Consequently, On the morning of October 22, 2025, the villagers discovered the Kali idol in the Kakdwip temple remains no longer in its original state. They found that someone had damaged it. Hence, they found the head of the Kali idol and a Shiva idol severed. Thus, the discovery created a loud hue and cry in the village, as Bengalis deeply revere Goddess Kali. Nevertheless, historically, people revere Maa Kali as the Divine Mother and a fierce protector.
Moreover, she symbolizes power, destruction, and liberation. Despite her intimidating appearance, people ultimately see her as a benevolent force. Besides, she delivers her devotees from ignorance and evil.
Outrage of the Desecration of a Goddess Kali idol
As a result, the incident led to protests by the locals. They blocked the National Highway. In Contrast, the police claimed that “some outsiders” had crept in. Thus, the police intervened to disperse the crowd. Additionally, the police arrested a villager Narayan Haldar, in connection with the crime. He confessed that he was intoxicated during the act.. The incident took no time to escalated into a political controversy. Following the incident, the BJP had accused the TMC government of shielding the culprits and failing to protect Hindu sentiments. Even CPM has also accused for failure to protect religious sentiments.
Unlike other cases, the police acted swiftly to prevent communal tension and apprehend the culprit.

Everyone knows that a drunker can create a lot of nuisances, but vandalism on the reputed Kali temple in Kakdwip sounds a bit absurd. He must have been aware of the fatal outcome that could wait for him. He is a local resident, and the temple is also local. Furthermore, the time of occurrence was the Kali Puja night, which is more shocking.
Accordingly, Koteswara Rao, superintendent of police, Sundarbans police district, briefed the reporter about the incident. But he seemed more interested in defending the sanctity of Maa Kali than in unfolding the incident to arrest the culprits. In his view, “We wish to reiterate that the sanctity of Maa Kali is of utmost importance to us. We request everyone not to spread misinformation or fall for any propaganda. The police will take every necessary step to safeguard the sanctity of Maa Kali.”
Internal conflicts of Trinamool
Moreover, the reports reveal that it’s the internal party conflict of Trinamool Congress. In addition, Manturam Pakhira, the MLA of Kakdwip assembly constituency and Bapi Halder the MP from Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency have rivalries. The core of rivalries is the political extortion and its distribution. People identified Narayan Haldar as a TMC supporter, but not a direct party activist. Bapi Haldar faction is in an attempt to hackle Manuram Pakira. As per sources, the Desecration of Goddess Kali idol, is a part of that. Mamata Banerjee couldn’t control such internal conflicts.
Expectation from Mamata Banerjee
Bengal’s faith has long been its strength, fierce, inclusive, and deeply emotional. When politics dares to defile that faith, it is not the idol that breaks, but the moral foundation of the society itself. The question is no longer who desecrated the goddess; Rather, it is who will dare to restore her dignity.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee worships Ma Kali every year. People now expect her to ensure proper justice. She must address the atrocity committed through the desecration of the goddess.
The desecration of a goddess’s idol is more than a law-and-order issue; it is an attack on Bengal’s cultural sanctity.
