Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is India’s premier investigative agency. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, it serves as the nodal police agency in India that coordinates investigation on behalf of Interpol member countries.
While often compared to the American FBI, the CBI has a unique legal structure and specific limitations regarding its jurisdiction within Indian states.
The CBI is not a statutory body; it derives its powers from the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946.
Unlike Central Customs or Income Tax departments, the CBI cannot automatically investigate a crime in a specific state. Under Section 6 of the DSPE Act, the CBI requires the consent of the State Government to exercise its powers there
