Mamata vs Army: Why the Row Escalated by Fort William?

Now it is Mamata vs Army. First, Mamata Banerjee made a controversial comment. Next, the Indian Army submitted a formal complaint to the Governor over her remarks. Earlier, Mamata had also made comments about the country’s armed forces. However, at that time, the Army chose to remain silent.

This time, the situation is different. Because of the seriousness of the comment, the Army decided to file an official complaint.

What exactly is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent allegation? She claimed that a senior Army officer is using the Fort William command base. According to her, this officer is working on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list under instructions from the BJP.

If she has specific evidence, she should present it clearly. However, she did not name anyone. Instead, she kept the allegation vague and indirect, referring only to “someone.” As a result, the matter escalated.

What actions did the Governor  take in Mamata vs Army Fight?

In response, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army took a strong step. Two senior officers of the rank of Army General sought the intervention of West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose. Therefore, the controversy has now moved beyond politics and into a serious institutional dispute.

Mamata vs Army complaints by Fort William

The Governor has taken this incident very seriously. He has also assured appropriate action. In practical terms, this likely means he will forward the complaint with his remarks to the Union Minister of Defence. He may also have sent a copy to the President of India.

Dilemma for Rajnath Singh?

As a result, the issue has now reached the desk of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. He faces a delicate dilemma. On one side is his personal rapport with Mamata Banerjee. On the other side is the morale and credibility of the Indian Army.

Many still remember the viral image from Dharamtala, where Rajnath Singh was seen speaking softly with Mamata Banerjee on the Singur protest stage.

Meanwhile, the Army has made its position clear. It believes that public allegations of political bias against serving officers seriously damage the institution’s credibility, neutrality, and dignity.

Therefore, what began as a political remark has now turned into a high-stakes institutional challenge for the central government.

How the Mamata vs Army Row Turned Serious?

India has many weaknesses. We often hear allegations of political bias in different institutions. The Oppositions always hurl abuses and some of them are really genuine.

However, one truth remains undeniable. When you and I sleep peacefully at night, it is because the Indian Army stands guard without rest.
Their duty is not limited to defending the country from external enemies. They also rescue citizens during internal crises and emergencies.
Therefore, such allegations against the Army are extremely serious.

This is not the first time Mamata Banerjee has made such remarks. Earlier, she once claimed that the Army was planning to cross the Second Hooghly Bridge and capture Nabanna. More recently, another incident drew attention. When the Army was dismantling a Trinamool Congress stage near Fort William, she alleged that nearly 200 soldiers fled after seeing her.

As a result, critics argue that repeated public accusations of this nature risk damaging the reputation, morale, and neutrality of one of India’s most trusted institutions.

Mamata vs Army: Couldn’t Mamata transform to a ruler?

Mamata Banerjee rose through street-level politics. Therefore, no one can easily question her political instinct or sharpness. Yet, even with full respect, one must say this clearly. After 15 years in power, she has not shed the mindset of an opposition leader.

The role of an opposition leader is limited. She can say no, block decisions, and mobilize protests. Movements like Singur, though destructive, once stirred public emotion and anger.

However, the situation changes once she sits in the Chief Minister’s chair. At that point, she must show greater responsibility and restraint.

Her accusations are not limited to the Army. She often speaks of deprivation by the Centre. She also repeatedly targets ED and CBI.
But she has gone even further. By constantly attacking the Election Commission of India, a constitutional body under Article 324, she raises serious questions. Is this behavior appropriate for a serving Chief Minister?

More importantly, do such remarks actually influence public opinion? On social media, mockery, memes, and satire about her statements are spreading rapidly. Does no one inform her about this growing public ridicule?

She even raised the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) during the Kolkata Book Fair inauguration speech. Mamata Banerjee often  makes political remarks in administrative meetings. She does so even in Nabanna-level official reviews.

Role of Advisors under lenses

This naturally raises another question. She has appointed many retired bureaucrats as advisers, enjoying post-retirement benefits. What exactly are they doing? After all, their salaries are paid from tax-payers’ money.

One can only hope that she does not intend to run a “Republic of West Bengal” within the framework of independent India.

In reality, Mamata Banerjee now appears to be under immense pressure. The Muslim vote base is fragmenting. The ASHA workers’ protests are intensifying. At the same time, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue is not unfolding in her favor. As a result, nothing seems to be going according to her plan.

Moreover, when there is only one post at the top, the need for sound advice becomes even more critical. At this stage, measured words and restraint matter the most.

What do the citizens want?

As an ordinary citizen of this state, it is deeply unsettling to see such developments. It does not feel right to hear about cases against a sitting Chief Minister in the Supreme Court. It feels even worse to hear about formal complaints by the Indian Army against her.

Therefore, beyond politics, this moment calls for calm leadership, responsible language, and institutional respect—for the sake of the state and its people.
