Professionalism in competitive world
The rat race in today’s intensely competitive world has created a strange kind of professionalism. People have replaced deep seeded human values with nothing but the desire to forge ahead. They suppress their basic emotions under serpentine deadlines and constant pressure.
Professionalism has turned ruthless in this fierce pace of competition.
In that world, “I” become the only existence and the only priority for a professional. People have no time to even look around. Often, they disconnect themselves completely from their personal and family life. Extreme professionalism brings immense success, but it steals peace. The right mix of ethics and professionalism may improve the work culture.
Professionalism should indeed shape one, but not transform one into a robot without emotions.

Extreme Professionalism
In reality, professionalism and humanity never had any conflict. They were never meant to oppose each other. The duo can only create the right work culture, which everyone expects. The problem begins only when professionalism reaches an extreme. At that point, their strong bond breaks.
An employee is a human being first. Like everyone else, he possesses emotions. He gets hungry and feels sleepy. He also longs for love and sympathy. The employee may race ahead in the ruthless competitive world, but he should not become a mental patient
The real crisis begins when profit becomes the top priority. Sometimes that means inadequate comfort or at times it means a lack of essential rest. Toxic target pressure forces many compromises. The employee may race ahead in the cut-throat competitive world, but he should not turn into a mental patient
But we must remember a simple truth: a person performs at their best only when they are physically and mentally healthy.
That benefits the team. In the end, it benefits the company or even the government.
Professionalism sometimes leads to inhuman acts like lay-offs. Economic recessions or disasters like 9/11 often force corporations to retrenchment. The work culture gets a backseat as a everyone knows the real impact of such dynamics. In such situations, companies must compensate employees with a humane approach.
However, from another angle, the companies also need to survive. Otherwise, everyone will lose their jobs.
During automation, many organizations reduced their human resources or transferred employees to different roles. This conflict has appeared not only in India but even in advanced Western countries. Now Artificial Intelligence is arriving with similar challenges. But people with skill and adaptability can survive in any situation.

Hazards
Now let’s address another point, professionalism often goes against ethics. Sometimes people even support the wrongful intentions of higher authorities. For example, the workplace may not remain compliant to proper safety standards. Yet an employee may stay silent to protect their career. A more alarming allegation comes from the medical sector.
Many hospitals set lab test targets for their doctors. To meet those targets, some doctors force patients to undergo unnecessary tests. We also often hear about illicit transactions between diagnostic laboratories and doctors.
But a true professional finds it extremely inhuman to compromise with ethics.
Many leaders, belonging to the old-school of thoughts, impose excessive workloads on their team members. They treat it as professionalism. Employees accept the pressure because they have no choice, but their minds become disturbed and frustrated.
A leader must build a warm and cooperative relationship with the team to develop a congenial work culture. If mutual trust and respect break down, the consequences can be severe. History has witnessed protests, humiliation, abuse, and even murders against many leaders.
Conclusion
Finally, we must admit that professionalism does not conflict with humanity or ethics. Their coexistence creates a truly productive and honest work environment. This environment becomes the most effective and result-oriented. No one should forget that human resources are invaluable. There can never be a substitute for them.
