Mamata visits Singur in 2026
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit Singur in 2026, again on January 28, 2026. This visit is significant because Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting there on January 18.
However, Modi did not make any clear industrial commitments during his speech. As a result, the people of Singur felt disappointed. The natural euphoria was missing from the overwhelming crowd.
Moreover, public emotion failed to surface at Modi’s rally. Therefore, his meeting could not generate mass enthusiasm among local residents.
Singur in 2026: From Industrial Dream to Political Battlefield
In reality, the people of Singur now understand politics well. They have realised that they are unlikely to get back their fertile farmland.
At the same time, no industry has come up either.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee promised industrial development in Singur in 2022. However, nothing changed on the ground.
In fact, She has used Singur to soar like a meteor, but has converted Singur a Graveyard of Industries.
She could not return the fertility so that the farmers could reap the benefit. There is a vast difference between the political promises and reality. Singur in 2026 has realized it even better.
Therefore, Jairul Sheikh, representing local farmers, says that Singur has seen no development at all. Instead, he claims, only the people have suffered.
Now, when Mamata visits Singur, hopefully she will critically analyse Prime Minister Modi’s recent public meeting. She will also likely respond to his claims.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress will try to mobilise a larger crowd than Modi’s rally. But the key question remains: will the people of Singur be misled once again?
Mamata Banerjee with her electoral politics
The Chief Minister may announce new benefits under the Bangla Awas Yojana. However, will such announcements truly satisfy the people of Singur?
She will repeat some fixed lines with it. We have heard these lines for so long that they sound like a broken record. She will say that despite “central deprivation,” she is running the state with great difficulty. She will claim that she is still giving allowances and benefits.
But she will never say, even by mistake, that the central projects stopped in West Bengal because of corruption.
She will also talk about an alleged conspiracy by the BJP and the Election Commission over the SIR issue. She will say that she and the Trinamool Congress are resisting it with full force. According to her, Bengal’s soil is a strong fortress.
I do not know how much the people of Singur will benefit from these political statements. However, they will clap loudly, if not out of fear, then out of devotion.
Why Singur in 2026 has become a Graveyard?
This is Singur, the place where former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee once dreamed of bringing heavy industry to West Bengal.
This is also that very Singur, where the Tata Nano car project was proposed.
In fact, 80–90 percent of the factory construction was completed. However, car production never began. And for this failure, the current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is held responsible.
At the same time, many political parties, including the BJP, shared the stage with her during that movement. Moreover, a large section of intellectuals marched on the streets of Kolkata at that time.
Later, many of those intellectuals found a place among the beneficiaries of the ruling establishment. As a result, today’s intellectual community appears to have slipped into deep political hibernation.
Why Singur shows a comedy of errors?
We can describe Singur as a “comedy of errors.”
- First, there was unnecessary haste by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government. The administration rushed the project without building wider consensus.
- Second, the Government showed administrative failure. They could not control the destructive movement that blocked the national highway.
- Third, Mamata Banerjee refused to compromise at any cost. At a time when she should have secured the highest possible compensation for farmers. But she instead stuck to an uncompromising position.
- Fourth, then BJP leaders and some others including intellectual classes openly stood beside Mamata Banerjee during the movement. This gave the agitation broader political backing.
- Finally, there was a serious lack of foresight. No one properly considered the long-term consequences of shutting down the factory.
Since then, a lot of political water has flowed under the bridge. Mamata Banerjee rose rapidly in politics, almost like a meteor. From the role of Leader of the Opposition, she finally reached her dream chair as Chief Minister.
Fifteen Years Later: What Did Singur Really Gain?
However, the real question remains: what has Singur gained in the last 15 years?
- Today, a large section of people, both willing and unwilling, want industry in Singur.
- The goal is simple. Everyone now understands the necessity of industrial development.
As a result, many educated youths from Singur have become migrant workers. They were forced to leave their hometown in search of jobs because West Bengal has been suffering badly from lack of Industrialization.
When Tata packed up and left Singur, it was Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, who warmly invited the group. Tata left Singur and moved straight to Sanand in Gujarat.
Question: Will Singur in 2026 Forgive Again?
Now, people are waiting to see what promises Mamata Banerjee makes during her Singur visit.
But if she returns with mere slogans, like the earlier “Singur Express” rhetoric, then the people of Singur may not forgive her this time.
