Series of attacks on women in West Bengal
A string of cases of attacks on women in several parts of the state has come into the surface in quick succession. Whether it is Uluberia or Bhangar or Maynaguri or Alipore, it sends a signal of anarchy. The rule of laws have to be reinstated demands a prompt call for action.
Attacks on women: Uluberia
The incident took place at Uluberia Government Hospital. A pregnant woman from Kharia Maynapur had been admitted to Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia with multiple medical complications. During a routine check-up, a junior doctor, unable to handle the case, called her senior for assistance.
An argument soon broke out between the two attendants accompanying the patient and the doctor on October 20. The situation escalated violently — the duo allegedly created chaos, hurled verbal abuses, slapped the doctor, twisted her hand, and even issued rape threats outside the hospital premises.

Fortunately, the doctor managed to escape the room, and the ward master promptly alerted the hospital police outpost. The swift intervention of the police prevented what could have been another horrifying repeat of the R.G. Kar incident. Notably, one of the accused is a home guard, who works in the police department.
Other attacks on women
In a separate incident, there had been a gang-rape on a homemaker in Maynaguri, North Bengal, inside her home on October 17. The perpetrators threatened the victim of death if she disclosed the assault. Police have arrested three men in connection with the crime.
Meanwhile, in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, the body of a minor girl was found hanging inside a wardrobe on Sunday. Her family discovered her unconscious and attempted to revive her, but she could not be saved.
Another molestation case involving an adolescent in Bhangar has also come to light.
A shocking news came from NCRB report, where the reveals that West Bengal tops the list for Acid Attacks on girls. West Bengal alone accounted for 27.5 % of all acid attacks in the country.
So, within a short span, incidents of attacks on women have dominated headlines — with Uluberia Hospital, Maynaguri, Alipore, and Bhangar emerging among the latest cases, further underscored by the recent NCRB report.
Regaining its Glory
West Bengal was once a beacon of learning, reform, and modernity. Now the accolades shower upon the state for corruption, financial fraudulence, attacks on women, violence and cut-money culture. The lawlessness is evident in every corner and every sphere of the state.
How long will this decay continue? When will Bengal reclaim its lost conscience?
