Unnecessary instinct to tighten the grip on IIMs

The Central Human Resource and Development ministry has envisaged the need to impose a restriction on the IIMs in the wake of social welfare. Such a decision will not entail the IIMs, the premier Management Institutes of the country, to decide on the fees for their courses. The fees have to be duly approved by the Government exclusively. We hardly support such steps as we feel that the Government is trying to claw to the unchartered territory of the IIMs, which is completely redundant. Perhaps the more prioritized issues have failed to make the HRD minister depleted and he has come in front to strengthen the grip on the leading Management Institutes of international repute. The obvious question arises, why does the Government fail to produce an educational institute of such caliber? Indian Institute of Management functions like a corporate conglomerate and the secretary of the HRD ministry holds a member portfolio in the decision making authority, board of governors of every IIM. Perplexed by such a radical decision, the IIM authorities are clearly annoyed because of such hybrid decision making policies, whereas the enthusiastic Government officials feel it as a ready-at-hand option to control the Institutes. Unfortunately, being aided by the Government grants, IIM cannot exhibit guts to show resilience to such a Government decision. It is indeed true that IIMs have been constantly glorifying India by producing exemplary Management guys and girls, who have been acclaimed across the globe. Such excellent track records unravel its quality and potential. Why to unnecessarily impose the bar? If the Government has to look for the social welfare, they should look into several Governmental institutes, which have been offering similar degrees or diplomas. Why to use the slogan of Social Welfare as a limbo to intervene in the activities of the classical institutes? We must admit that India is a country, where many people belong to the BPL categories and the door of education should not be hindered for the meritorious students for mere financial incapability. The Government can either send them to their own institutes or grant special scholarships, so that they can also study at the premier management institute. Going slightly beyond the realm, we can say that the Government should be equally painted for not tracking such talents at the right stage. It is worth mentioning that we do not support any kind of control of the Government on the educational institutes. The UGC should be able to function independently, so as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council...

Pandemonium at Christ Church School

The Chief Minister and Education Minister have shown utter dissatisfaction apparently on the role of the administration and the police on the day’s mishaps at Christ Church School. The principal of the school had been taken to the custody just because of the demands of the mob and the police are accused of insisting the principal on signing the resignation letter without carrying out their prime responsibility of maintaining law and order situation. They could try to reduce the rampage, at the least. Alas! Our police forces are found to be highly proactive in some cases, while are observed to remain inactive in most of the cases. We hope that even the noblest well wisher of the police forces would demand that the police could stick to their responsibilities on that day. The death of a girl at the budding age is surely painful. The mobs had found to be agile and attempted to go beyond their jurisdiction. Vandalism or Hooliganism can never be tolerated and perhaps the policemen, who were present on that day, had forgotten their prime duties. There is no use of making tall claims and the police could not stand by the teachers and the principal on that day. They could not even stop the rampant attack of the mob on the Christ Church School and its assets. It’s a shame that most of the parents and guardians had been found to lead the school-bound mob. Mukul Roy with his usual characteristics has noticed his CPM ghost in the episode, which is really ridiculous. Rather, it was nice to watch that the teachers of the school had visited the victim’s house and tried to solace her mother. The Governor has criticized it rightly. If the Guardians are not disciplined, how can they inculcate the discipline among their children? We do belong to the same school of...

Knowledge Base Education System

The prevailing education system boasts of bountiful of degrees and diplomas, which are awarded on people, who duly deserve the same. Rigorous studies and serious endeavor with the dollops of intelligence might fetch such academic qualifications, but do they really change the wisdom of the qualifiers? Fortunately, India has gifted several politicians, who have shown traits to remain credible over the years. We feel jubilant about the glorious efforts of the leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose or such leaders. They remain iconic even in today’s world. Unfortunately, the recent trend of Indian politics hardly conforms to that glorious period. Most of the citizens have started labeling the politicians as monsters, who hardly exhibit selfless political activities. The saddest part is that even some of the leaders with high academic profile have joined the fray. Many leaders start by plucking at the heartstring of the cohorts by using unparliamentarily words and that too without any shame. The leaders are expected to refer to the negatives of the opponents at length, but abusive languages often create a churning. When everyone is aware of the fact that no one can ever escape the alert glances of the flourishing media, why should they indulge in such activities? Perhaps, it is the vote faces and vote bank that inspires them to come up with legendary vocabularies, which spread its far reaching tentacles on the followers. Alas! Had their fertile brains read the agonies of the people, the middle class segment in particular? If a kid of five years asks his mother about the meaning or the impact of some of the jargons, which are frequently delivered, the mother has to shy off. Off course, some political parties duly appreciate it bestowing key positions upon the leaders as a prize of usage of such illicit words. Though democracy has empowered us with enormous freedom it is education that primarily entitles us to good positions in the administration or decision making bodies. Had it been an epoch of belief and trust, even the educationists could be diverted by the brain storming lectures of the politicians. When some ill-bred leader comes up with such indecent language, we find solace in the fact that the concerned leader just matches up to expectations in according to their status or culture. When a educated leader comes up with such incorrigible statements, even the educationists are to treat it as an agonizing social decay. Perhaps the time has come when the think tank has to undergo...

Where falsehoods dominate the education segment

The state West Bengal has become a classic example of catastrophe, with the law and order situation of the state hitting rock bottom. Leaving asides other spectra, even the education system has been badly battered by the unwanted intervention of the political parties and their able dissidents. The memories of unrest in several colleges have not faded as of yet. The people belonging to the same school of thoughts have started creating disarray at school levels obeying the corporate philosophy of a top down approach. The ridiculous demands of empowering the failed students with the permission to appear for the final Council examination have become the headlines in the most daily newspapers. The teachers have been found to be under siege by the students and their guardians. The nicely organized agitations have shown the glitters and glimpses of alleged involvement of various political parties. The guns have been primarily pointed to the ruling TMC party and their allies. It is indeed true that the political parties know the best to organize the mob and raise a flamboyant demonstration. Historically, West Bengal has witnessed plenty of such instances in last couple of decades. The roles of Government and the controlling authorities have become seemingly disgusting in the recent episode. When the students without the desired marks assemble in front of the schools or the education institutions, the administration fails to protect them. The self contradictory statements of the patron of the council have turned them to a laughing stock. The versions of the concerned stake holders have become diagonally opposite in front of media. An agency can be hired to investigate the repository of falsehoods. The role of the education minister has raised acrimonious debates. While the critics have been found to concentrate primarily on the authoritative issues, we want to divert a bit. We want to state clearly that it is the question of ethics and morality. When an unsuccessful student raises his voice against the institution, should anyone show sympathy? If the student appeals to the concerned authorities, the power of reconsideration should be left at their sole discretion. If the council or even the Government attempts to show a pro people face even for such students, it will ultimately destroy the education system. If anyone knows that he can pass out without studies, he or she may become completely unwilling in studies. Can the state withstand the long term disaster? Where are we heading at? Let the roles of the autonomous bodies and Government be clearly defined...
