Seemandhra had a brilliant 76.01% voter turnout for the polls held on May 7. Elections for 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 assembly seats in Seemandhra took place in this for the first time after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The contest between the YSR Congress and the BJP-TDP combine has made the elections very interesting this time. As the Congress had won 21 Lok Sabha seats in this region in the 2009 parliamentary polls they face a huge challenge in Seemandhra this time around. Nearly 36 million electorates were set to exercise their franchise in this election while 333 candidates, were in the fray. The highest turnout of 74 per cent was recorded in Guntur district while the lowest polling percentage of 67 per cent in Visakhapatam district. YSRCP-TDP leaders and activists were involved in a face-off at Sattenapalli in Guntur distreict. One died in a clash between TDP and YCP clash at Inagantivaripeta in East Godavari district. The Lok Sabha elections held yesterday on May 7, 2014 was for 64 parliamentary seats spread out over 7 states of India. In Jammu and Kashmir polling took place for 2 LS seats. 19 candidates were in the fray for the 1357321 electors in the state who voted for electing their lawmakers. In the state of Uttarakhand polling took place for all its five LS seats. 74 candidates were locked in the contest with the 6883379 strong voters selecting their MPs. Modi invoked Lord Ram in Faizabad in UP while campaigning yesterday on May 6th for BJP and also garnered votes for party candidate Irani competing against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Modi’s campaign saw him involved in a bitter war of words with Priyanka Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee as campaigning ended for 64 constituencies, including Amethi, 25 seats in Seemandhra and 15 seats in UP. Modi was heard to reiterate his call for change at the centre for better governance in these constituencies that go to polls today. 72 candidates are contesting in six seats in West Bengal where Modi raised the emotive issue of illegal immigrants that drew sharp reaction from CM Mamata Banerjee who referred to him as a paper tiger accusing him of stoking communal fire. Modi retorted back saying that Banerjee should prove herself to be a real tiger by taking action against the culprits in the Saradha scam case that has rocked West Bengal. Telangana registered 72 % voting, Gujarat 62 % until 6 pm today for the 26 LS seats, Srinagar 25.6%, Uttar Pradesh 57.1% for 14 LS seats, West Bengal 81.35%, Punjab 73% and Bihar 60% by the end of voting scheduled on April 30, 2014. Famous personalities like Governor B L Joshi, Mayawati, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Mishra exercised their franchise in different booths in UP today. Amit Shah a key aide of Narendra Modi today said that people were seeing a ray of hope in the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. He declared so during an address to the media after casting his vote. On the other hand the EC has decided to take action against Modi for flashing BJP symbol deliberately giving off an indication to vote for BJP while being photographed after casting his vote in Ahmedabad today. Action will be taken against Modi under section 126 (1B) of the Representation of People’s Act. The EC has asked authorities in Gujarat to take necessary steps against Modi. Polling in Tamil Nadu touched 62% on April 24 by 3 pm IST. Tamil Nadu saw actor Ajith and his wife Shalini vote for Lok Sabha elections at Palavakkam, ECR. M. Karunakaran and N. Jayadevi casting their vote for the first time at Nungambakkam. V. Ganesan and actor Kamal Hassan casting their vote in Alwarpet in Chennai. Actor Sarathkumar and his wife Radika voted at Palavakkam, ECR. CM J Jayalalithaa, DMK president M. Karunanidhi, DMDK founder Vijayakant, MDMK leader Vaiko, D Raja and D Pandian of CPI were all seen to cast their votes. Polling crossed the 60 percent mark by 3 PM IST in the single phase Lok Sabha elections to 39 constituencies in Tamil Nadu on April 24. Around 5.50 crore voters were supposed to have exercised their democratic right from Tamil Nadu to select their lawmakers from among the 845 candidates in the fray. While Chennai North recorded 50.4 per cent turnout, Chennai South recorded 49.3 per cent and Central Chennai 48.55 per cent polling, respectively.
