Sri Lankan cricketers win asia cup

The Asia Cup 2014 sojourn in Bangladesh has been the show case of feats accomplished by the unbeaten Sri Lankan cricket team. It was on a note of conquest that they had begun the inter-sub-continental tournament by beating defending champions Pakistan in the opening game. Today they have cruised to victory against Pakistan in the final held at Mirpur claiming the champions badge for Asia Cup 2014. The main two pillars of success for Sri Lanka were Thirimanne and Jayawardhane who carried out the task of reaching their allocated target with considerable ease. As Sangakara who has been in remarkable nick all through the tournament paused for while in this final match it was upon these two batsmen who made a short work of their task. They seemed to have batted gleefully showing poise, tolerance and skill beyond their experience. The entire match was paced so beautifully by these two batsmen that their incredible work seemed almost mechanical. The clinical effort of Sri Lankan cricketers is a lesson that must be learnt by the other teams of the cricket playing sub-continental nations. Sri Lankan cricketers have continued this form throughout and were always in the hunt during their innings at the final held in Dhaka. They never let the match slip from their clutches despite a poor show of fielding during the Pakistani innings which cost them a lot of extra runs. This fault of theirs reflected upon the Pakistani total which at one stage seemed to hover around only 210. Ultimately, during the Pakistani innings, having elected to bat first after winning the toss, it was all about Fawad Alam who scored his maiden century and Umar Akmal scoring 59 who stitched together a partnership yielding a final score of 260 to be chased down by the Sri Lankans. Thirimanne scored a brilliant 101 while Jayawadhane played an invaluable returning to form innings of 75. The more said of the Sri Lankan innings the less it is as they have been simply outplayed the rest of the teams showing of their superior class. Lasith Malinga again claimed his share of 5 wickets during the Pakistani innings. The Sri Lankans finally won with 22 balls to spare for the loss of just five wickets. Pakistan’s only high point in the game was when Saeed Ajmal picked up two wickets of consecutive balls in his over. Then it was a Sri Lankan show all the way with a 156-runs stand between Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene winning the match for...

Kohli scripts Indian win

The first win of 2014 for Indian cricket came when Virat Kohli guided India with his sparkling 136 in a 213-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane who scored 73. India won its first ODI of the year with a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Asia Cup opener in Fatullah, in Narayangonj district in the southern suburbs of Dhaka, Bangladesh yesterday on February 26, 2014. It was Kohli’s grit and Rahane’s maturity that paved the way for a win after a struggling start by the Indian openers Dhawan and Rohit when asked by to win against a competitive 279 for seven set by Bangladesh including a fantastic century from Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim. This elusive and much wanted win has come as a balm for the Indian cricketers who have faced crushing defeats in their recently concluded tours of South Africa and New Zealand. It is also a sweet revenge for the Indians as they had crashed out of the tournament in 2012 after having lost to Bangladesh for a place in the finals that...

Lasith Malinga roars on Pakistan

Lasith Maliga with his furious spell in the slog over has steered Sri Lanka to a super duper win in the first Asia cup match against Pakistan. Sri Lanka could manage only 296 in their quota of 50 overs based on an exemplary 102 of their opener, Lahiru Thirimanne. The asking rate did never seem to be steep for the Pakistan batsmen. Misbah-ul Haq and Umar Akmal had ensured almost a smooth win for the Pakistan, but Lasith Malinga appeared as the savior of Sri Lanka by claiming 5 wickets including Misbah and Afridi in a devastating bowling spell that turned the match to Pakistan’s favor. A solid 161 run partnership between Thirimanne and Sangakara helped the Sri Lankans to raise a huge total in front of Pakistan. The crowd came to live when Umar Gul dismissed Sangakara. However, Sri Lanka has managed a victory by 12...
