Oscar Pistorius the blade runner has been cleared of murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp but the sprinter could still be convicted of culpable homicide for his negligent shooting that led to the death of his girlfriend. Judge Masipa ruled that the prosecutors led by Gerrie Nel had failed to prove that Pistorius intended to kill Steenkamp after an argument. He, a double-amputee and renowned in world athletics can get a guilty verdict. Jugde Thokozile Masipa has cleared him of premeditated murder on the Valentine’s Day 2013. The judge proclaimed that the accused had acted hastily using excessive force making his conduct negligent. She dismissed the defence arguments about Pistorius’ heightened sense of fear because of his disability. The defence had rallied that the shooting of Steenkamp was a tragic accident as Oscar had mistaken her for an intruder hiding behind a locked toilet door. When Judge Masipa delivered her not-guilty decision on the primary charge of premeditated murder Pistorius sat sobbing with tears streaming down his cheeks. Oscar can face up to 15 years in prison for culpable homicide though it has no minimum sentence. Jwala Gutta pulls out of Asian Games

It is a blow for the Indian contingent participating in the Asian Games later this month that ace Indian women’s doubles player Jwala Gutta has pulled out. She has done so after sustaining a sprain in the right knee ahead of the Asiad in Incheon, Korea. The World Championship bronze medalist, Jwala developed a pain in her right knee. She was advised complete rest for the next two weeks by her doctor. She had sprained her knee during practice for the Asian Games 2014. The knee had swollen and now needs to be rested for 10-12 days which left her no other option but to withdraw from the Asian Games. Jwala added that it was the first time that she had withdrawn from a tournament due to injury in her career. She has won gold and silver at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively. Sania Mirza condemns BJP leader’s comments...

Renowned tennis player Sania Mirza has condemned the comments of a Telangana BJP leader hailing her as Pakistan’s daughter-in-law. Sania retorted back saying that she was an Indian and will always remain one. K Laxman, a BJP legislator from Telangana, has questioned the credentials of Ms Mirza, 27 as brand ambassador for India’s youngest state as she is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. The statement has been widely criticized creating a furor of sorts. Mirza’s family belongs to Hyderabad for more than a century and she can never be branded an outsider. Indian hopes were kept alive at the Davis Cup tennis tournament by none other than the ever reliant Leander Paes- Rohan Bopanna duo as they put on an incredible show against a Serbian pair in Bangalore. Leander Paes yet did the impossible along with Rohan Bopanna as they recorded a dramatic win by coming back from behind 1-6, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3, 8-6 over Serbian pair of Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac. The Indian team is jubilant after this win in Davis Cup World Group play-off tie. This Serbian pair has beaten the legendary Bryan brothers in Davis Cup only in the last season.
