Anuradha Lohia set to join as VC of Presidency University

Ultimately things have been sorted out and a new vice chancellor of Presidency University, Anuradha Lohia is to take charge on May 15, 2014. The controversy surrounding the joining of the new VC to Presidency seemed to have arisen as outgoing interim VC Malabika Sarkar had previously informed the higher education department that she would be available till May 13. However the government asked Lohia on April 28th to take over on May 2 itself. Sarkar stated that she was not duly informed about this by the higher education department. Naturally sources close to Sarkar claimed that she felt humiliated as her term had been cut short. Sarkar’s official term ends on May 15. Sarkar had also sent an SMS to the higher education department informing them that she desired to vacate her post only on May 13 as 13 is her lucky date.

Sarkar has been expecting an official communication from the government. The government however was never too keen upon granting a choice to Sarkar to decide on her date of departure because the order extending her term by three months had clearly stated that her extension from February 15, 2014, would to be until a new VC joins. An official said that Lohia was given May 2 as the joining date as she was leaving the country for three weeks only to return on May 26 which would mean a premier university like Presidency would be left without a VC for a long time. Lohia will be the first full time vice-chancellor of Presidency. Lohia had stated on April 28 after her appointment that the Governor of West Bengal had wished her luck to be able to do the best for Presidency University. Lohia had spent 45 minutes discussing with the Governor about the envisioned path for Presidency in its journey towards excellence.

Anuradha Lohia is a Presidency alumnus having got her PhD from Calcutta University. She then undertook a postdoctoral training at New York University Medical Center. She has a laboratory at Bose Institute. Lohia was initially the second choice amongst a list drawn out of probable candidates for heading the Presidency University by a three member VC search committee. The committee put the list to the governor for his due approval. As the first choice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, former director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research refused to take up the offer citing health issues the governor on gave his approval to Anuradha Lohia as his choice. Sumantra Chatterji of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, was the third on the list. The VC search committee headed by UGC chairman Ved Prakash had Sugato Bose and Delhi University professor Nayanjot Lahiri as its members.
